Before your first run
The effect depends on the room and three display switches the app can't read, so only you can verify them.
- Lights off. If you can see your hand in front of your face, it's too bright. Standby LEDs, charger glow and curtain gaps count.
- True Tone off: Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone.
- Night Shift off, and clear any schedule: Settings → Display & Brightness → Night Shift.
- Auto-Brightness off: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness.
- Landscape, close. The red must fill your view. Keep your eyes on the spinning diamond.
Didn't get much?
Nearly always, it's one of these.
The definitive test: 90 seconds of red in pitch black, one eye cupped. If the eyes disagree, it works. The app offers it as the one-eye proof.
Give it about 3 minutes between runs: your eyes are still resetting.
About brightness
The app sets your screen brightness for each session — 35 % on HDR screens, low enough that the panel's HDR peak stays available — and puts your own level back when the session ends. On screens without HDR headroom it runs at full brightness instead. If the app is closed in the middle of a session, your level is put back the next time you open it (or when you next lock and unlock your iPhone).
Which iPhones
The app checks your display when it opens and tells you what it found. The full effect needs a Display P3 screen with HDR (EDR) headroom, which every OLED iPhone has. On a screen without HDR headroom, the app says so and runs at full brightness instead; the effect still works, slightly smaller.
Is this olo?
No. No display can show olo. The color isn't on the screen: the app uses your display's full brightness and color range, and a dark-room protocol, to set your eyes up. What you see after the cut happens in you.
Safety
A session is a single bright color transition — steady light, never flashing. Skip it if intense light triggers migraine, photosensitive epilepsy, or similar symptoms. Press and hold anywhere to stop.
